Ode to Grunge

I’ve been feeling very grunge, according to No. Magazine, I’m not the only one.

Cece Yoost channels unkempt and nonchalant for the quarterly’s recent rock inspired series. The oversized and eclectic wardrobe is paired with deep makeup and disheveled hair courtesy of Shirley Simpsons. Messy environment and pretty girl, all shot by the dynamic duo of Karen Inderbitzen-Waller and Delphine Avril Planqueel.

Perhaps it’s the weather? The new decade? Boredom with the status quo? Grunge translates beyond a period of time , genre of sound, heroin chic, even the flannel trend. It’s a timeless preference for stripping down the extraneous and rejecting traditional theatrics, a disenchantment with the Hype!

I recently discovered Jimi Hendrix spurs my inner rock star. I was shooting, grooving, and that revolutionary soul put me in a fashion haze. (I’m excited to see how this manifests in 2D!) 90’s MTV was rebellious and Daria was a television badass. I dig those glasses, her brains, and that attitude.

Or consider my current uniform; belted army jacket, black combat boots, and a big pair of headphones. The only other character I’ve seen with a style like that is La Femme Nikita (1990).  However, this is more function than fashion statement. In the cold the over-ear sort double as muffs. Regardless, is there really a reason for subtlety when swaying to the beat of my own drum?

You could listen to Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, or Dirty Dirty Dub. You could read Samuel Beckett. No matter the generation, there is a recurring desire to drop the lights and cease the charade. A craving for humanity, authenticity, and raw energy.

Rock On.
